Training on Gender and Transitional Justice

Transitional justice mechanisms are designed to address past human rights violations, promote accountability, and support reconciliation in societies emerging from conflict or repression. However, when gender perspectives are not systematically integrated, justice processes may overlook the specific harms experienced by women, girls, and marginalized groups. Sexual and gender-based violence, forced displacement, economic exclusion, and social stigma often remain under-documented and inadequately addressed.

Across Africa and the Middle East, there is increasing recognition that inclusive and sustainable peace requires gender-responsive transitional justice. Truth commissions, criminal prosecutions, reparations programs, institutional reforms, and memorialization initiatives must reflect diverse lived experiences and ensure equal access to justice. This demands structured methodologies, institutional commitment, and culturally informed approaches that move beyond symbolic inclusion.

This 10-day course equips participants with practical tools to mainstream gender across all pillars of transitional justice. Participants will learn how to conduct gender-sensitive documentation of violations, design inclusive truth-seeking processes, develop gender-responsive reparations frameworks, strengthen legal protections, and ensure meaningful participation of women and marginalized groups. The training also addresses institutional reform, policy alignment, and monitoring mechanisms to prevent future abuses.

Through case studies, participatory exercises, and applied program design sessions, participants will gain the expertise needed to strengthen accountability mechanisms while promoting equity, healing, and long-term social cohesion.
