Course Overview

NEW

Water is a critical resource throughout the oil and gas value chain, supporting drilling, hydraulic fracturing, production, refining, cooling, steam generation, and environmental protection. At the same time, the industry generates significant volumes of produced water and wastewater that require effective treatment, reuse, disposal, and regulatory compliance. Growing water scarcity, stricter environmental regulations, and increasing sustainability commitments require organizations to adopt integrated water management strategies that optimize water use, reduce environmental impacts, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen long-term water security.

This course equips participants with practical knowledge and engineering approaches for managing water resources across upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas operations. Participants learn how to assess water demand, develop water management plans, characterize produced water, select water treatment technologies, optimize water reuse and recycling, manage wastewater disposal, monitor water quality, protect groundwater and surface water resources, strengthen regulatory compliance, and implement water stewardship initiatives. The course also explores desalination, zero liquid discharge (ZLD), digital water monitoring systems, water risk assessment, circular water management, and climate-resilient water strategies.

Participants examine internationally recognized frameworks and standards, including ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, ISO 46001 Water Efficiency Management Systems, ISO 24516 Asset Management for Water Utilities, ISO 31000 Risk Management, International Finance Corporation (IFC) Environmental, Health and Safety Guidelines for Onshore and Offshore Oil and Gas Development, International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) Good Practice Guidance, API Recommended Practices, World Bank Environmental Standards, Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation). Through water balance exercises, treatment process design, water quality assessments, produced water management simulations, compliance workshops, and real-world case studies, participants develop the expertise to manage water resources responsibly while improving operational performance and environmental sustainability.
