Africa’s rapidly evolving trade architecture, driven by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), regional economic communities, digital trade growth, industrialization strategies, and expanding regional value chains, has significantly increased the need for advanced trade negotiation and policy expertise across governments, regional institutions, private sector organizations, and development agencies.

As African markets become more integrated, trade negotiations are no longer limited to tariffs and goods movement. Policymakers and negotiators must increasingly address complex issues including trade in services, digital trade governance, intellectual property rights, competition policy, investment facilitation, industrial protection measures, sustainability standards, non-tariff barriers (NTBs), and regional regulatory harmonization. Effective trade negotiation has therefore become a strategic capability for protecting domestic industries, strengthening regional competitiveness, attracting investment, and expanding intra-African trade opportunities.

This course provides practical and strategic training on trade policy and negotiation within African markets and continental integration frameworks. Participants learn how to negotiate trade agreements, manage trade disputes, resolve non-tariff barriers, navigate services trade frameworks, address intellectual property and competition issues, and strengthen institutional trade policy capacity within the African single market context.
