Instead of treating people as research subjects, it treats them as research partners.

Instead of producing knowledge for its own sake, it produces knowledge for action.

And instead of asking communities to participate in research, it asks researchers to participate in change.

In this course, you'll learn how to:

And yes, we'll discuss why the people closest to a problem often understand the solution better than the people writing the reports.

Overview

Organizations working in community development, public health, education, governance, social justice, environmental management, humanitarian action, and organizational transformation increasingly recognize that sustainable change requires meaningful participation from the people most affected by the issues being studied.

Traditional research approaches often position researchers as experts and community members as passive sources of information. While these methods can generate valuable insights, they may fail to capture local knowledge, build ownership, strengthen capacity, or support long-term change processes.

Participatory Action Research (PAR) offers an alternative approach that combines research, reflection, participation, and action. PAR engages stakeholders as active partners throughout the research process, enabling communities, organizations, and institutions to identify problems, generate knowledge, implement solutions, and evaluate outcomes collaboratively.

PAR is widely used in community development, public policy, public health, education, social innovation, organizational development, environmental management, and human rights initiatives. By integrating participation and action into the research process, PAR strengthens local ownership, improves relevance, enhances learning, and increases the likelihood of sustainable impact.

This course equips participants with practical and strategic expertise in designing, facilitating, implementing, and evaluating Participatory Action Research initiatives. Participants will learn how to engage diverse stakeholders, facilitate collaborative inquiry, manage participatory processes, and translate research findings into collective action.
