Course Overview

NEW

Historic buildings, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, monuments, museums, and heritage assets represent invaluable cultural, architectural, social, and economic resources that require careful preservation for future generations. However, heritage conservation and restoration projects face unique challenges including aging infrastructure, incomplete historical documentation, structural deterioration, environmental threats, urban development pressures, climate change impacts, and limited conservation resources.

Traditional heritage documentation and management methods often rely on fragmented records, paper-based archives, disconnected surveys, and isolated conservation studies. These approaches can make it difficult to accurately assess asset conditions, coordinate restoration activities, manage conservation data, monitor interventions, and support long-term preservation strategies.

Building Information Modeling (BIM), particularly Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM), has emerged as a transformative digital methodology for documenting, managing, conserving, and restoring cultural heritage assets. HBIM integrates 3D digital models, historical information, material specifications, condition assessments, conservation records, structural data, maintenance histories, and restoration plans into a centralized and intelligent information environment.

Through the integration of laser scanning, photogrammetry, drone surveys, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital twins, and advanced visualization technologies, HBIM enables conservation professionals to create accurate digital representations of heritage assets and make informed decisions regarding restoration, maintenance, risk management, and preservation planning.

Governments, heritage authorities, museums, UNESCO-related projects, conservation agencies, architects, engineers, and cultural institutions increasingly utilize BIM-based approaches to improve documentation accuracy, stakeholder collaboration, project coordination, asset lifecycle management, and conservation outcomes. BIM also supports disaster preparedness, climate resilience planning, visitor management, and long-term heritage sustainability.

This course equips participants with practical and strategic expertise in applying BIM methodologies to heritage site conservation and restoration management. Participants will learn how to develop HBIM models, integrate digital survey technologies, manage heritage information systems, support restoration planning, and implement lifecycle-based conservation strategies.

The course also explores digital heritage management, 3D reality capture technologies, conservation data standards, digital twins, AI-assisted heritage documentation, sustainability considerations, risk management, and international best practices in cultural heritage preservation. Through case studies, digital modeling exercises, restoration simulations, and practical workshops, participants will develop the competencies required to implement BIM-enabled heritage conservation programs.

Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) is a specialized application of BIM used to digitally document, model, manage, conserve, and restore historic buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, and cultural heritage assets.
BIM centralizes historical records, 3D models, condition assessments, maintenance data, and restoration information, enabling more informed conservation decisions and improved project coordination.
HBIM often integrates laser scanning, photogrammetry, drone mapping, GIS, digital twins, AI-based analysis tools, virtual reality, and sensor-based monitoring technologies.
Digital documentation improves accuracy, preserves valuable information, supports restoration planning, enhances collaboration, facilitates risk management, and helps safeguard heritage assets for future generations.
Yes. BIM and HBIM methodologies are increasingly applied to archaeological sites, museums, monuments, historic urban areas, cultural landscapes, and heritage infrastructure to support documentation, conservation, management, and public engagement.
