Course Overview

NEW

Agriculture and energy are two of the most critical sectors supporting economic development, food security, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods. However, increasing population growth, climate change, land scarcity, water stress, and rising energy demands are placing unprecedented pressure on available natural resources. Governments, agricultural producers, energy developers, investors, and development agencies are increasingly seeking innovative solutions that simultaneously enhance food production, expand renewable energy generation, and optimize land use.

Traditionally, agricultural production and solar energy development have competed for land resources. Large-scale solar farms often require significant land areas, raising concerns about the conversion of productive agricultural land into energy infrastructure. At the same time, farmers face challenges related to climate variability, drought, extreme heat, rising production costs, and the need for reliable energy sources.

Agrivoltaics (Agri-Voltaics), also known as dual-use solar agriculture, has emerged as a transformative approach that combines photovoltaic (PV) energy generation with agricultural production on the same land area. By strategically integrating solar panels with crops, livestock systems, horticulture, irrigation infrastructure, and agroforestry systems, agrivoltaics creates opportunities to generate renewable energy while maintaining or even enhancing agricultural productivity.

Research from multiple regions has demonstrated that properly designed agrivoltaic systems can improve land-use efficiency, reduce water evaporation, moderate crop heat stress, improve microclimate conditions, increase farm resilience, diversify rural incomes, and support climate adaptation goals. Agrivoltaics is increasingly being adopted across arid and semi-arid regions, water-scarce agricultural landscapes, and climate-vulnerable farming systems.

Modern agrivoltaic projects require expertise in solar engineering, agricultural sciences, land-use planning, environmental assessment, water management, energy economics, GIS analysis, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Successful implementation depends on selecting appropriate crops, designing optimal panel configurations, understanding site-specific environmental conditions, and balancing energy generation with agricultural productivity.

Technological advances in bifacial solar panels, tracking systems, elevated mounting structures, smart irrigation, IoT sensors, remote monitoring, artificial intelligence, and precision agriculture are expanding opportunities for agrivoltaic deployment worldwide. These systems increasingly contribute to climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy transitions, ESG objectives, carbon reduction targets, and rural economic development.

This course equips participants with practical and strategic expertise in agrivoltaic systems design, implementation, operation, and management. Participants will learn how to evaluate sites, assess crop compatibility, optimize solar layouts, analyze economic feasibility, manage environmental impacts, and develop integrated food-energy systems.

The course also explores policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, carbon markets, climate adaptation strategies, community engagement, and emerging innovations in agrivoltaics. Through case studies, design workshops, feasibility exercises, and field-based applications, participants will develop the competencies required to successfully plan and implement agrivoltaic projects.

Training on Agri-Voltaics, Integrating Solar Panels with Agricultural Land, and Co-Locating Food and Energy Systems FAQs

Quick answers to common questions about this course

Agrivoltaics is the practice of using the same land area for both solar energy generation and agricultural production, allowing crops, livestock, or other agricultural activities to coexist with solar panel installations.
Properly designed agrivoltaic systems can reduce heat stress, moderate temperatures, decrease water evaporation, and create favorable microclimates for certain crops, while maintaining adequate sunlight levels.
Shade-tolerant crops such as leafy vegetables, herbs, berries, forage crops, and certain horticultural products often perform well under agrivoltaic conditions, depending on local climate and system design.
Yes. Solar panels can reduce soil moisture loss through evaporation, lower crop water demand during extreme heat conditions, and support more efficient irrigation management practices.
Agrivoltaics helps diversify farm income, supports renewable energy production, reduces vulnerability to climate extremes, improves water efficiency, enhances land-use productivity, and contributes to sustainable food and energy systems.
